Right Behind - Storytelling as a Waiting Gesture
We find ourselves in a windowless room. The light is dim. A few empty beer bottles, a full ashtray and an empty pizza box greet us on a worn coffee table, surrounded by an old leather couch, a few chairs and a fridge. Used props of a place to be. There‘s nothing to do but grab a beer, light a cigarette and wait. Muffled bass and passing voices penetrate through the wall. You can make out the crowd on the other side. It‘s hard to tell what time it is. Has it been 20 minutes or three hours? A few battered floor lamps light up the surroundings, their frames casting a few shadows on the dark painted walls. We‘ve been here before – in other places. It will take some time for the room to fill with sweat, extasy and smoke again. Obviously we‘re early, but it could also be late. We throw our jacket on the couch and take a look in the crooked mirror next to the door. A young yet old face returns our gaze. We know that the real thing is happening somewhere else. Somewhere we haven‘t got to yet. Whoever is hanging around here may feel in between, but also somehow belongs. Past and future selves included. Full circle. Nothing might happen, but anything can.
